Procedural 3D urban content generation in simulation and games

    Get PDF
As virtual urban environment generation becomes a widespread research topic, the need to create enriched urban worlds, which group both the geometric and semantic properties has become a necessity, the purpose being to obtain interactive, adaptive and consistent world entities. This paper suggests a representational model of urban environment generation based on both geometric and semantic knowledge, the future work being to create a modelling tool of a 3D urban environment, which stores the semantic information and allows the final non expert user to acquire information about the environment before and after its creation and to explore this information in an interactive way

T.A.C: Augmented Reality System for Collaborative Tele-Assistance in the Field of Maintenance through Internet.

ISBN: 978-1-60558-825-4International audienceIn this paper we shall present the T.A.C. (Télé-Assistance-Collaborative) system whose aim is to combine remote collaboration and industrial maintenance. T.A.C. enables the copresence of parties within the framework of a supervised maintenance task to be remotely "simulated" thanks to augmented reality (AR) and audio-video communication. To support such cooperation, we propose a simple way of interacting through our O.A.P. paradigm and AR goggles specially developed for the occasion. The handling of 3D items to reproduce gestures and an additional knowledge management tool (e-portfolio, feedback, etc) also enables this solution to satisfy the new needs of industry

Haptic System for Eyes Free and Hands Free Pedestrian Navigation

International audienceUntil now, Augmented Reality was mainly associated with visual augmentation which was often reduced to superimposing a virtual object on to a real world. We present in this document a vibro-tactile system called HaptiNav, which illustrates the concept of Haptic Augmented Reality. We use the haptic feedback method to send users information about their direction, thus enabling them to reach their destination. To do so, we use a turn by turn metaphor which consists of dividing the route into many reference points. In order to assess the performances of the HaptiNav system, we carry out an experimental study in which we compare it to both Google Maps Audio and Pocket Navigator systems. The results show that there is no significant difference between HaptiNav and Google Maps Audio in terms of performance, physical load and time. However, statistical analysis of the mental load, frustration and effort highlights the advantages of HaptiNav compared to two other systems. In the light of the results obtained, we present possible improvements for HaptiNav and describe its second prototype, at the end of this paper

Procedural and semantic modeling of virtual environments for serious games development

    Get PDF
International audienceVirtual environments are useful tools for visualization, discovery as well as training. In serious or learning games contexts, 3D graphical worlds, interaction, navigation and immersion capabilities are needed to propel narration and emotion. Furthermore, they are key elements to materialize pedagogical content and to support knowledge transfer. Semantic modeling, serious game classification and gameplay component identification allow generating serious game scenarios linked to the 3D world modeling and interaction or animation capabilities

This paper discusses how imagery and Augmented Reality (AR) techniques can be of great help not only when discovering a new urban environment but also when observ-ing the evolution of the natural environment. The study is applied on Smartphone which is currently our most familiar device. Smart phone is utilized in our daily lives because it is low weight, ease of communications, and other valuable applications. In this chapter, we discuss technical issues of augmented reality especially with building recognition. Our building recog-nition method is based on an efficient hybrid approach, which combines the potentials of Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) features points and lines. Our method relies on Approxi-mate Nearest Neighbors Search approach (ANNS). Although ANNS approaches are high speed, they are less accurate than linear algorithms. To assure an optimal trade-off between speed and accuracy, the proposed method performs a filtering step on the top of the ANNS. Finally, our method calls Hausdorff measure [15] with line models

Experimentation of a New TeleAssistance System Using Augmented Reality

ISBN : 2-9515730-9-XInternational audienceT.A.C system was built in order to propose a new mode of remote communication. When somebody needs to be assisted on a manual task, classical technical support methods such as phone or visioconference rapidly show their limits in terms of human interaction. By allowing a distant expert to see exactly what an operator is seeing, he could interact with him in interactive time thanks to augmented reality via an adequate interaction paradigm named "Picking Outlining Adding". By "simulating" co-presence of the expert close to the operator through visual guidance information, ambiguity of language and difficulty of communication are avoided, and operations are easily performed. Scientific experimentation we have conducted and we describe in this article shows the teaching interest and the efficiency of this new mode of communication. The operator learns and operates more rapidly, in complete serenity, increasing reliability of his tasks. Moreover, throughout this paper, we show that the developed principles are sufficiently general to be applied to other use cases of tele-assistance that go beyond the originally planned industrial maintenance

International audiencealthough man has become sedentary over time, his wish to travel the world remains as strong as ever. The aim of this paper is to show how techniques based on imagery and Augmented Reality (AR) can prove to be of great help when discovering a new urban environment and observing the evolution of the natural environment. The study's support is naturally the Smartphone which in just a few years has become our most familiar device, which we take with us practically everywhere we go in our daily lives

    Get PDF
